Course Objectives


Course participants successfully completing this course will:

  1. Describe the primary population affected by otitis media.
  2. Estimate the cost of otitis media.
  3. Review the normal pediatric auditory anatomy.
  4. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the middle ear.
  5. List the functions of the eustachian tube (ET).
  6. Associate the anatomical structures in and near the eustachian tube with ET functions.
  7. Relate the ways that fluid enters and leaves the ET with changes in pressure and risk of disease.
  8. Describe the differences between pediatric and adult auditory anatomy.
  9. Differentiate between AOM and OME.
  10. List the three primary pathogens isolated from the middle ear.
  11. List hereditary and racial factors contributing to the development of OM.
  12. List environmental factors contributing to the development of OM.
  13. Describe the benefit of pneumatic otoscopy.
  14. List two methods of collecting indirect evidence of middle ear fluid.
  15. List two methods of collecting direct evidence of middle ear fluid.
  16. Suggest a logical sequence for performing an auditory physical assessment of a child.
  17. Describe the medical treatment of AOM and OME.
  18. List the first and second line antibiotics.
  19. Describe some of the surgical treatments of OM.
  20. Suggest some preventive measures against contracting OM.
