Licensure

Licenses to practice nursing may be obtained by applying for a license by examination or by endorsement.

Ohio requires criminal background checks for licensure and has imposed absolute bars to licensure in the case of some felony convictions, such as for murder, rape, and child molestation. Applicants for licensure or certification must submit fingerprints for an FBI (federal) and BCI (civilian) screening, conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

If some regulation for activation or renewal is not met (e.g.some required continuing education contact hours are not taken), a nurse may opt to place the licenses on 'inactive status'. However, an additional fee is levied when the license is reactivated. All continuing education contact hours must be completed prior to reactivation.

Instant feedback:

A nurse who is licensed in another state must apply for a temporary permit by endorsement and take the NCLEX® prior to receiving a permanent license.
