Print
and Online Resources
Although cerebral palsy
is widely-covered in both medical texts and published journal articles, the
best resources for learning about CP in general are the books written for both
parents and professionals who work with these special children.
- Without a doubt, the
best book for both nurses and for families of children with CP is Children
with Cerebral Palsy: A Parents' Guide. Edited by Elaine Geralis and
published by Woodbine House in January 2003, this newest edition provides
a well-rounded discussion of cerebral palsy, with a heavy emphasis on family
involvement and the impact of the disorder on the family system.
- For parents and nurses
interested in a medically-focused book about cerebral palsy, The Official
Parents' Sourcebook on Cerebral Palsy by James N. Parker, MD and Philip
M. Parker, Ph.D. and published in 2002 by Icon Health Publications is a good
option.
- Another good resource
is Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Manual for Therapists, Parents,
and Community Workers, published in 2003 by Intermediate Technology,
Inc.
- Finally, both nurses
and parents may want to check out Cerebral Palsy: A Complete Guide for
Caregiving (Johns Hopkins Press Health Book), which was published
in 1998, but still contains extensive, appropriate information about the care
of children with CP.
Parents and nurses may also
find online information and assistance about cerebral palsy at the following
web sites:
- United
Cerebral Palsy's (UCP) website (http://www.ucp.org), which features channels
on education, employment, health and wellness, housing, parenting and families,
products and services, sports and leisure, transportation, and travel.
- The
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) page (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/cerebral_palsy/cerebral_palsy.htm),
which has an excellent overview of the disorder, along with an update on current
research initiatives.
- The
American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) web
site (http://www.aacpdm.org/index?service=page/Home), which has extensive
resources for both professionals and parents on a wide range of topics related
to CP.
