Objectives
Upon successful completion
of this program, the nurse will be able to:
- Identify specific neurological,
sensory, orthopedic, cardiac, respiratory, autoimmune, mental health, dental,
and oncological health risks of children with Down syndrome, and describe
appropriate nursing interventions related to these risks.
- Cite the health care
guidelines established by the National Down Syndrome Society for children
with Down syndrome, and highlight nursing interventions to address these guidelines.
- Identify specific recommendations
for feeding and nutrition in youngsters with Down syndrome.
- Discuss appropriate weight
management strategies and physical activities for children with Down syndrome.
- Describe developmental
issues specific to children with Down syndrome, and identify beneficial therapies.
- Outline services provided
to children with Down syndrome through the early intervention program.
- Identify supports available
to children with Down syndrome through the public educational system and state
services.
