New Treatments and Research

A number of HIV vaccines are currently being tested, and many new drugs for HIV, or AIDS-related infections, are being developed. Although these drugs are not yet approved for clinical use, some patients who need them may receive these drugs by means of a "compassionate use" exception.

"Compassionate use" refers to the approval by a health care agency’s Institutional Review Board to authorize the administration of a drug that has not yet been approved. Compassionate use is reserved for patients facing extremely serious and/or life threatening situations.
