Nurses working with adults with Down syndrome should be aware of the common health risks of their patients, and monitor for warning signs on an ongoing basis. It’s easy for clinicians working with these adults to miss warning signs of new health problems, dismissing them as part of the Down syndrome.

Several characteristics of this population make identification of new health issues problematic:
